Despite the high altitude (4,650m at Salkantay Pass), I feel pretty normal and am able to power up the mountain at a reasonable pace— but dad and Eileen (who literally had 16hrs to acclimatise in Cusco before we started the trek) are experiencing some minor headaches and shortness of breath this morning. The first day going over Salkantay Pass was pretty cold, with the daily high in the mid 30’s (F), and the nightly lows in the high single digits. Once we lost elevation, the daily temperatures were in the 60s with the nightly lows in the 30s and 40s.

We packed our things and began working our way toward our trek’s “summit,” the Salkantay Pass.

Unlike the classic 3-day Inca Trail trek, which requires you book a spot at least five to six weeks in advance (in the low season), the Salkantay Trek can be booked in Cusco upon arrival. If you think the beauty of the Humantay Mountain is impressive, get ready to see the face of Apu Salkantay, a huge glacier that’s considered one of the main deities in the entire region. After lunch, we’ll ascend for 2 hours to Ichupata or Japanese Pampa (4,200 masl / 13,779 fasl).
